    This was a required book for my doctorate. However, I never used it… the material just wasn’t pertinent to what I was doing. It is fairly simplistic with common sense thrown in. Unless it is required, I would not bother buying this book.

    Have purchased 90 copies of this to use as a textbook for creating a 5 hour training session on PM fundamentals for coworkers. It is an easy read, well laid out (with only a couple minor exceptions), and covers most all of the pertinent aspects of what it means to participate in, and manage, projects. It gives easy explanations of why PM is important to an organization, why it is important to define the problem, plan the solution and how to step through the processes and life-cycle of a project.

    It is well aligned with the PMBOK (even the 4th Edition, as it talks briefly about Critical Chain Method and has a chapter that introduces Earned Value Mgmt). There are great examples of most topics scattered throughout the book.

    There were only two things that we felt could be improved upon:

    - It discusses Work Breakdown Structures; but also includes Activity (Task) Definition, Activity Sequencing, Resource Requirements and Work Duration Estimating as part of that process rather than making them a part of Time Management processes as the PMBOK does. Probably more aligned with real life in some ways… it just seemed important to us that people concentrate on structuring the Objectives before they think about the Tasks. Maybe because we have some larger corporate-wide issues surrounding creation of strong definitions of Marketing and Product Requirements…

    - It has Mission, Vision, Goals and Objectives in Chapter 4… AFTER Project Planning (Chapter 3). Since the Problem Definition and Project Objectives should drive Planning we felt that this should be reversed and sequenced the training accordingly. The information provided is sound… just seemed to be a little out of order.

    One other key point to consider… it doesn’t discuss Agile methodologies and Scrums. This was good for us at our current level of PM implementation… but you may have been expecting some of that to be covered.

    This book is for a beginner who has never done PM. There is nothing about Process Groups or Knowledge Areas, and only a couple of pages on ES, LS, EF, LF, and Earned Value. It touches on only the most basic of formulas. I would pass this up and go with the PM for Dummies book if you are new to PM, and pass it up altogether if you are already a PM. There are some very good books for intermediate level PM’s, those studfying for the PMP exam, and seasoned PM’s as well.

  5. I’m not sure this is a master’s level textbook, but it is helpful and well written. The author doesn’t take himself too seriously, which helps. I would recommend for anyone in the corporate world who has had project responsibilities dumped in his or her lap.
